Presidencia de la Nación

Mitre, Sarmiento and Avellaneda

The extents of these presidencies can be comprehended by the analysis of the previous trajectories of each mandatary.

From the beginning, Mitre’s political life was intertwined with his work as a writer and historian, a prolific career that contributed to a better understanding of the past and forming a national identity. As for Sarmiento, his most outstanding work as a writer was prior to his presidential term, and took part mainly during exile. His book Facundo, or Civilization or Barbarism from 1845 analyzed and debated the Argentine reality.

Avellaneda’s life as a writer was connected to his academic endeavours. His work had a practical purpose and intended to be a platform for action in the resolution of urgent problems.
