Architect Francisco Tamburini (1846-1890)
At the start of 1883, the administration of President Roca appointed the Argentine ambassador in Rome to hire an architect to design the national public buildings in Buenos Aires - among them, Casa Rosada - and characterize the city as the metropolitan area of a growing nation. The ambassador’s choice landed on Francisco Tamburini, borned in Ascoli Piceno, who studied in Anconia and Bologna, where he graduated as Architect Engineer. On July 1st 1883 a contract was signed between Tamburini and the Argentine government, where he was appointed as a special employee of the Government, as part of the National Department of Civil Engineers.
During his six years working in our country, and because of the relevance of his work, Francisco Tamburini became one of our main architects of the XIXth century. Besides the buildings commissioned by Roca, he created other important works during Miguel Juárez Celman’s presidency in Buenos Aires and Córdoba. His masterpiece was the Teatro Colón (English: Columbus Theatre) in Buenos Aires, which was designed in 1887; its interior stands out for its grandeur, proportions and notable acoustics, and the exterior forms a monumental volume of great urban presence.
